About GLAD Heart

In order to be considered for participation in GLAD Heart, practices had to:

• Consist of Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or both.
• Be within a three hour driving radius of Wake Forest University.
• Commit at least half of the providers at the practice to participate.
• Possess a computer with internet connectivity for set-up of the Palm technology and study software.
• Be willing to participate in a chart audit to determine the success of the program.

The 61 practices who have consented to participate in GLAD Heart include 14 single-provider practices and 17 with at least 5 providers; 44 family medicine, 14 internal medicine and 3 multi-disciplinary practices. Twenty percent of the practices are located in rural areas, according to the US Census.

We asked the providers to complete a survey at the beginning of the study to tell us a little something about who was participating. There are approximately 232 providers total participating in the project from the 61 practices. Our survey response rate was 83.2% (193 providers). Fifty-seven percent of our survey respondents were male, 85% were of non-Hispanic White race, and 51% had completed their residency training greater than nine years ago. Among the physician respondents, 73% were MDs, 1% were DOs; Physician Assistants comprised 13.5% of the respondents while Nurse Practitioners comprised 11.5%.

The participating practices in GLAD Heart are located across the state of North Carolina, from as far west as Asheville/Hendersonville and as far east as Fayetteville. Twenty-two North Carolina counties total are represented.
